In a landmark decision aimed at recognizing the pivotal role played by representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI), Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced a substantial increase in their honorarium and allowances across the state. This monumental move not only signifies the government’s commitment to empowering grassroots governance but also underscores its dedication to enhancing the livelihoods of PRI members who serve as the backbone of rural administration.
The decision to augment the honorarium and allowances of PRI members comes as a testament to their unwavering dedication and tireless efforts in serving their communities. Chief Minister Patnaik’s acknowledgment of their invaluable contributions reflects a deep appreciation for their role in driving sustainable development and fostering inclusive growth at the grassroots level.
Under the revised scheme, several categories of PRI members, including Zilla Parishad chairpersons, vice-presidents, members, Panchayat Samiti chairpersons, vice-presidents, members, Sarpanchs, Naib Sarpanchs, and Ward members, will witness significant increases in their monthly honorarium and daily allowances. These adjustments are poised to substantially improve the financial well-being of PRI members, providing them with greater stability and recognition for their service.
In addition to the hike in honorarium and allowances, the government has also introduced comprehensive welfare measures for the families of PRI members. In the unfortunate event of a member’s demise during their tenure, the government will provide a generous ex-gratia amount of Rs. 2 lakh. Furthermore, provisions have been made to offer financial assistance of Rs. 2 lakh in case of complete disability and Rs. 1 lakh in case of partial disability, ensuring the well-being and security of PRI members and their families.
The decision to augment the honorarium and introduce welfare measures represents a substantial increase in government expenditure. While the initial outlay for remuneration and allowances of PRI members stood at Rs. 79.88 crore, the revised scheme will entail an expenditure of Rs. 242.56 crore. This additional investment underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to prioritizing the welfare and livelihoods of grassroots leaders.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s announcement marks a significant milestone in the journey towards strengthening grassroots democracy and promoting inclusive governance. By providing financial recognition and support to PRI members, the government is not only empowering local leadership but also fostering a conducive environment for participatory decision-making and community development.
As Odisha embarks on this transformative initiative, it reaffirms its commitment to upholding the spirit of grassroots empowerment and inclusive governance. Through increased honorarium, enhanced welfare measures, and steadfast support for PRI members, the state is paving the way for a more equitable and prosperous future for all its citizens, ensuring that no effort goes unrecognized in the pursuit of holistic development.
