Odisha’s popular dessert, Rasagola, received a melodic tribute with the unveiling of the Rasagola Anthem. The event took place in the presence of Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj and renowned Odissi vocalist Padma Shri Shyamamani Devi. This anthem celebrates the beloved sweet treat and beautifully captures the divine tale of Lord Jagannath and Goddess Lakshmi’s celestial discord.
The Anthem’s Creation
The anthem, released on the eve of Rasagola Diwas and Niladri Bije, blends Odisha’s rich culture, soothing music, and delectable cuisine. The lyrics were penned by celebrated Odia author Subhranshu Panda. The talented Abhijeet Mishra composed and performed the melody. Panda described the song as a harmonious blend of medieval-era traditional Odia music and contemporary composition. The anthem’s three segments draw inspiration from the works of Odia literary giants Upendra Bhanja, Bhakta Salabega, and Banamali Dasa. The opening lines pay tribute to Jagannatha Das’ revered ‘Bhagabata’ and also capture the essence of the iconic Dahuka Boli of the world-famous Ratha Yatra.
The Composer’s Perspective
Abhijeet Mishra, the singer and composer of the anthem, shared his excitement about the project. “I was instantly captivated by the lyrics! I’ve been resonating with their vibes for over a year and a half. It’s a testament to Lord Jagannatha’s blessings and Subhranshu Panda’s creative genius that this project came to fruition. As a composer, I firmly believe that when tradition is presented in a fresh and exciting way, people will wholeheartedly embrace it,” Mishra said.
Event Highlights
The anthem release event, organized by Odia Media Private Limited at Jaydev Bhawan in Bhubaneswar, also featured a captivating short film directed by Subhranshu Panda. The film showcased the making of the song in various iconic locations across Puri, Konark, and Bhubaneswar. The audience was further enthralled by a live performance of the song by renowned Odissi exponent Guru Saswat Joshi and his students, who elegantly brought to life the ancient tradition of offering Rasagola in the 12th-century-old shrine.
Chief Minister’s Best Wishes
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi extended his best wishes to all on the occasions of Niladri Bije and Rasagola Divas. Taking to his X handle, CM wrote: “Many many greetings on the occasion of holy Niladri Bije and Rasagola Day. Chaturdhamurthy will be crowned today at Ratna Singhasan after their nine-day-long sojourn. On this occasion, Lord Jagannath offers delicious Rasagola to his beloved wife to pacify her anger.”
The Significance of Niladri Bije
Niladri Bije is also observed as Rasagola Divas in Odisha. During this festival, Lord Jagannath, who undertakes a journey to the Gundicha temple with his elder brother and sister, pacifies Goddess Mahalakshmi’s anger by offering her Rasagolas. Niladri Bije marks the concluding ritual of the historic Rath Yatra, which commenced on July 7, when the celestial siblings embarked upon a nine-day trip to the Gundicha temple, regarded as their birthplace.
The Rasagola Anthem, with its rich cultural references and melodic tribute, has become a symbol of Odisha’s pride and heritage, enthralling audiences and highlighting the state’s deep-rooted traditions.
