With the newly elected government taking charge in Odisha, one of the foremost challenges is ensuring the integrity and efficiency of the state’s welfare schemes. Ghost Ration Cards Discovered

In a startling revelation, Odisha’s Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister, Krushna Chandra Patra, informed the Odisha Assembly about the existence of over 16 lakh ghost ration card holders. This significant issue was brought to light during a session on Wednesday, highlighting the need for stringent measures to ensure that only eligible beneficiaries receive benefits.

Addressing Political Interference

Minister Patra, while responding to a query by MLA Durga Prasanna Nayak, shared that 6,19,836 new applicants have sought ration cards. He emphasized the government’s intent to accommodate those whose names were previously deleted due to political rivalry or other reasons, encouraging them to reapply for consideration. “We want the beneficiaries, whose names were deleted due to political rivalry or some other issues, to apply again, and the government will consider such applications,” said Patra.

Implementation of KYC Norms

To address the problem of ghost ration cards and ensure the inclusion of genuine beneficiaries, the Odisha government has initiated the process of updating KYC norms. This comprehensive process involves collecting biometrics and other details of the beneficiaries. “Biometrics and other details of the beneficiaries will be collected for the ration cards. Names of deceased beneficiaries will be removed, and new cards will be issued to eligible applicants,” Patra explained.

Streamlining the Enrolment Process

The process for updating KYC details involves ten parameters for the enrolment and issuance of new ration cards. This rigorous procedure aims to eliminate ghost ration card holders and incorporate genuine beneficiaries. The government is committed to refining the system to ensure that resources reach the right people, thus enhancing the transparency and efficiency of the food security scheme in Odisha.
