A Mission to Make Education Accessible
In an era where many young professionals chase high-paying careers, one young individual has taken a different path, dedicating himself to making education accessible to students in need. Meet Kanhu Charan Parida, a young philanthropist from Odisha’s Bhadrak district, who is revolutionizing education in his community by offering free tuition to students in higher classes. His efforts are providing a lifeline to students who face financial struggles, helping them overcome barriers and continue their academic journeys.
Kanhu’s Early Life: Empathy Shaped by Struggles
Born and raised in the small village of Nalagohira under Chandbali block, Kanhu’s journey has been shaped by his own financial hardships. Growing up in a modest household, he developed a strong bond with books and a passion for learning. Despite facing challenges, he persevered, eventually earning a bachelor’s degree from Bhadrak Autonomous College and a B.Ed from Acharya Nagarjuna University. Rather than pursuing a traditional career after graduation, Kanhu’s heart was drawn to helping others, particularly the bright young minds in his village who were being held back by economic constraints.
Identifying the Problem: Lack of Educational Resources
Kanhu noticed a significant gap in the education system in his village. Many students, especially those from farming families, were unable to afford private tuition, and the nearest coaching center was 10 kilometers away—an impossible trek for many. These challenges forced some students to give up their academic ambitions despite their potential. Determined to make a difference, Kanhu took it upon himself to provide free tuition to students from Class IX to XII, particularly focusing on those in the science stream.
Founding Nalagohira Sikhya Bikash Manch: A Collective Effort
In 2018, Kanhu established the Nalagohira Sikhya Bikash Manch, an initiative dedicated to providing free education to underprivileged students. Recognizing that his efforts alone would not be enough, Kanhu enlisted the help of former students who were preparing for competitive exams or pursuing higher degrees. Together, they worked to teach and mentor the students, offering guidance in complex subjects and preparing them for their exams.
Kanhu’s commitment extends beyond academics. He organizes workshops to foster the holistic development of his students, ensuring they are not only well-educated but also well-rounded individuals. His team also promotes environmental awareness through plantation programs, contributing to a greener community.
Overcoming Initial Resistance: Family Support Through Results
Kanhu’s decision to focus on teaching rather than pursuing a traditional career initially met resistance from his family. His relatives compared him to his peers, many of whom had secured prestigious jobs in government or other high-paying sectors. However, as his students began to excel in their studies and achieve remarkable results, his family’s attitude changed. Today, they take pride in his efforts, recognizing the impact he has made on the lives of countless students.
A Unique Library Model: Recycling Knowledge
In addition to providing free tuition, Kanhu has also established a unique library system for underprivileged students. Understanding that many families cannot afford new textbooks, Kanhu collects donated books and redistributes them to students in need. Once the books are used, he reclaims them and passes them on to new students, creating a sustainable cycle that maximizes the use of resources. This initiative not only promotes literacy but also ensures that no student is left behind due to a lack of materials.
Impact and Future Goals: A Vision for Continued Growth
Through his tireless work, Kanhu has helped more than 200 students achieve academic success. His goal is to continue expanding the Nalagohira Sikhya Bikash Manch and reach even more students in neighboring villages. By offering free tuition, mentorship, and access to educational resources, Kanhu is shaping the future of his community and fostering a culture of learning and inclusivity.
A Beacon of Hope for Rural Education
Kanhu Charan Parida’s inspiring story demonstrates the power of one individual’s determination to make a difference. By dedicating himself to providing free education, he has given hope to students who might otherwise have been forced to abandon their dreams. His initiative is not only transforming lives but also setting a powerful example of how grassroots efforts can address educational inequalities.
