Odisha’s Expanding Seafood Market and Fishery Policies
Odisha, with its long coastline and rich marine biodiversity, plays a significant role in India’s seafood industry. The state’s abundant marine resources support a thriving seafood export sector, particularly from the Paradip Fishing Harbour. In 2022-23, Odisha exported over ₹3,000 crore in seafood, making it one of the leading contributors to India’s fishery exports. The Odisha government, recognizing this potential, has implemented fishery policies focused on sustainability, infrastructure development, and skill training for local fishermen, aiming to harness international market opportunities and improve livelihoods within fishing communities.
Introducing the ‘Paradip’ Brand for Global Markets
In a strategic move to enhance Odisha’s global footprint, the state government plans to double seafood exports by branding its products under the ‘Paradip’ name. This branding initiative, set to launch with an upcoming European delegation visit from November 11 to 22, seeks to solidify Paradip’s reputation as a premier source of high-quality seafood. Seafood products such as shrimp, crab, squid, octopus, and cuttlefish, which are highly sought-after in international markets, will now be labeled with the ‘Paradip’ brand, elevating Odisha’s identity in the global seafood market and attracting better prices.
Upgraded Export Infrastructure for Efficient Trade
To support this ambitious export strategy, Odisha is upgrading its logistics and transportation facilities. The state is increasing the availability of refrigerated containers with advanced storage features to ensure the freshness of seafood during transit. Additionally, plans for air cargo services are underway to streamline the export of high-value seafood items from Paradip, Chilika, and other coastal areas, ensuring that live seafood like crab and shrimp can reach global markets daily.
Strong Market Reception and Quality Improvements
Reflecting on the benefits of the ‘Paradip’ branding, Srikanta Parida, President of the Odisha Marine Fish Producers Association (OMFPA), noted a substantial increase in both the quality and market price of Paradip’s seafood products. The branding has not only improved the product’s value but also built a solid reputation for Odisha’s seafood on the international stage.
A Promising Future for Odisha’s Seafood Industry
With focused branding, improved infrastructure, and a commitment to sustainable fishery practices, Odisha is poised to become a prominent player in global seafood exports. The ‘Paradip’ brand initiative is expected to generate employment, elevate product value, and ultimately double seafood exports, propelling Odisha’s fishery sector toward a promising future in international markets.
