Key Meeting in Delhi: CM Decision on the Horizon
On Thursday night, Maharashtra’s outgoing Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, met with Amit Shah at his residence in Delhi. BJP President J.P. Nadda, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and NCP leader Ajit Pawar also joined the high-level meeting, which lasted for two hours. Speculation is rife that Devendra Fadnavis is the frontrunner for the Chief Minister’s post, given his experience and the BJP’s dominant performance. However, an official announcement is yet to be made.
Shinde, in a press briefing before the meeting, reiterated his commitment to “alliance dharma,” stating that he would abide by decisions taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. Shinde affirmed, “There are no obstacles regarding the Chief Minister of Mahayuti. I have always prioritized collective governance over personal ambition.”
Caste Dynamics and Leadership Roles
The choice of Chief Minister is also influenced by the caste composition of the newly elected Assembly. A significant proportion of the 288 MLAs belong to the Maratha community, making representation a key factor in leadership selection. Fadnavis, a Brahmin, has previously served as Chief Minister in 2014 and briefly in 2019. His potential reappointment would mark a continued alignment with the BJP’s larger strategic framework, bolstered by the influence of the RSS.
Meanwhile, sources close to Shinde suggest he is unlikely to accept the Deputy Chief Minister’s position, deeming it unsuitable for someone who has already held the Chief Minister’s office. Shiv Sena MLA and spokesperson Sanjay Shirsat indicated that Shinde would remain in the cabinet but may nominate another leader from his faction for the Deputy CM role.
A Balanced Cabinet in the Making
The discussions in Delhi also extend to the composition of the cabinet. Maharashtra’s government can accommodate a maximum of 42 ministers, with a proposed division of 22 ministries for the BJP, 12 for the Shiv Sena, and 10 for Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction. The BJP is reportedly negotiating for key portfolios, including the critical Home Ministry, reflecting its dominant position in the alliance.
