Silver filigree work is a highly skilled art form traditionally done by local artisans on the Eastern shores of Odisha. Creativity takes courage and this man has kept the legacy alive. His creativity and intricate pieces of beautiful art work got global repute which eventually helped his birthplace – Cuttack to reserve the legacy of “Silver City”. The Silver filigree work has garnered accolades from admirers of fine arts globally.

He is Pankaj Kumar Sahoo, born in an artisan family, who never gave up his passion to inherit the art form from his father, despite several ups and down in keeping the art alive. Inspired by his artist father and one of his friends, the physically challenged artist Pankaj Kumar Sahoo has become an inspiration to others. His determination and love for his art opened doors to international recognition and appreciation. Besides different ornaments used as jewellery, this silver filigree jewellery is also used to embellish the idols of Durga and the silver filigree backdrops on the puja pandals are a treat to the viewers during Durga puja.

This esteemed artisan is however concerned about the future of this art form, which he wishes his kids to learn to keep it alive and carry forward the family tradition. Silver filigree is the traditional art form of Odisha and claims its origin from the Mughal period in India. This work from Cuttack is famous all over the world. To make this dying art flourish again, Mr Sahoo is approaching the Government with recommendation for creation of a filigree hub.

Mr Sahoo was conferred with various awards for his creations, which includes the prestigious Presidential Award in 1995, and the Gem and Jewellery Skill Council of India (GJSCI) award for his outstanding contribution to silver filigree art and crafts.

VARINDIA honours the artist of the soil as one of the Crown Jewels of Odisha.
