Beti Padhao Scholarships Empower 84 Girls in Odisha

Removing Barriers to Girls’ Education

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) is advancing its flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, the ‘Beti Padhao Scholarships’, to ensure that financial constraints do not stand in the way of bright young women pursuing their studies. Designed specifically for girls from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, the initiative aligns with national efforts to promote education for the girl child, empowering them to realise their academic and career ambitions.

Scholarships for Academic Excellence

This year, 84 meritorious students from the Barbil and Koira regions of Odisha have been selected for the awards. The recipients represent a diverse spectrum of academic pursuits—ranging from Class 9 school students to those enrolled in higher secondary, undergraduate, ITI, diploma, engineering, medical, and other professional courses. The beneficiaries also include athletes competing at state and national levels, highlighting the programme’s reach beyond traditional academics.

The award ceremony in Barbil saw the scholarships handed over by Tehsildar Rakesh Kumar Panda, who lauded the initiative for breaking financial barriers and opening new pathways for young women to succeed both academically and professionally.

Commitment to Community and Development

Senior leadership from AM/NS India was present at the event, including Sharanappa Kambalii, Mines Development Head; Amit Kumar Dubey, Senior General Manager of Mines Operations; Satyakama Das, Manager of Sagasahi Mines; and Murali Sahoo, HR Head, Mining Odisha.

Kambalii emphasised that the scholarship programme is part of the company’s broader mission to foster inclusive growth:

“By supporting these students, we are not only nurturing individual talent but also strengthening the communities we serve. Education is the cornerstone of sustainable development, and we are proud to contribute to building a more equitable future.”

Selection Process and Implementation

To ensure fairness and transparency, AM/NS India has partnered with Protean eGov Technologies for the mobilisation and processing of scholarships. Candidates are shortlisted through a rigorous merit-and-need-based framework, ensuring that support reaches those who most deserve it.

The initiative not only addresses financial limitations but also motivates students to maintain high academic performance. It acts as both an incentive and a support system, encouraging them to aspire for higher educational and professional milestones.

More Than Financial Aid

While the scholarship covers educational expenses, its impact goes deeper—it helps shift community perceptions, reinforcing the importance of girls’ education and demonstrating tangible examples of success. For many of the awardees, the scholarship is the difference between continuing their studies and being forced to step away due to financial hardship.

Moreover, by recognising students from varied disciplines—including sports—the initiative celebrates holistic development, valuing talent, determination, and ambition in all forms.

Building a Brighter Tomorrow

The ‘Beti Padhao Scholarships’ stand as a testament to how corporate initiatives, when thoughtfully designed and inclusively executed, can drive long-term social change. By investing in the education of girls from marginalised communities, AM/NS India is not just funding individual dreams—it is creating ripple effects that uplift families, inspire peers, and contribute to the socio-economic growth of entire regions.

As these 84 young women step forward with renewed confidence and resources, they carry with them the promise of a future where education and opportunity are within reach for every girl, regardless of her background.
