Bhadrak District, an administrative division of Odisha, came into existence on April 1, 1993, and is named after its headquarters town, Bhadrak. The district has a rich heritage associated with Goddess Bhadrakali.
Geography and Demographics:Situated at 21.0667 Latitude and 86.5000 Longitude, Bhadrak District is bordered by Balasore (north), Jajpur and Baitarani River (south), Keonjhar (west), and Bay of Bengal and Kendrapada (east). It covers an area of 2505 sq km with a population of 1,506,337, including 760,260 males and 746,077 females. SC population is 286,723, ST population is 25,141, and OBC population is 15,142.
Administrative Structure:The district has one subdivision, Bhadrak, with 7 tahasils, 7 blocks, 2 municipalities, 2 NACs, 17 police stations, and 218 Gram Panchayats.
Climate and Agriculture:The climate is generally hot and humid, with May as the hottest month. Monsoon arrives in June, contributing to 75% of the annual rainfall. Agriculture, especially paddy cultivation, is the primary income source. Coastal areas rely on fishing for livelihood.
Economy and Industries:Bhadrak’s economy includes major industries like FACOR, a leading Ferro Chrome manufacturer, along with small industries such as AB Electricals and Abhigoura Rice Mill. The District Industries Centre promotes various industries and self-employment programs.
Education:Bhadrak District has notable educational institutions, including Bhadrak Autonomous College, Bhadrak Women’s College, Bhadrak High School (Zilla School), and Bhadrak Institute of Engineering and Technology. The district has contributed to prominent personalities like ex-Chief Ministers Dr.Harekrushna Mahatab and Mr. Nilamani Routray, Moulabi Mohammad Hannif, Kanta Kabi Laxmikanta Mohapatra, and Jatiya Kabi Banchanidhi Mohanty.
