Advancing Fire Safety Infrastructure
In a crucial step to enhance fire safety across India, the union home minister-led committee approved projects worth Rs 725.62 crore for fire service modernization in Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and West Bengal. This funding, part of a broader initiative to bolster disaster resilience, reflects a commitment to improve fire services infrastructure, training, and equipment to better protect life and property in the event of emergencies. This latest allocation is a component of the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), underscoring the Centre’s emphasis on disaster management across states.
Project Allocation and Funding Strategy
Out of the Rs 725.62 crore allocated, Rs 147.76 crore has been assigned to Chhattisgarh, Rs 201.10 crore to Odisha, and Rs 376.76 crore to West Bengal. This distribution follows an earlier approval of Rs 2,542.12 crore for 15 other states under the “Expansion and Modernisation of Fire Services” initiative. The Union Finance Minister, Agriculture Minister, and NITI Aayog’s Vice Chairman are key members of this high-level committee, underscoring the inter-departmental collaboration that supports the planning and allocation process.
The scheme operates on a cost-sharing model, with state governments expected to contribute 25% of the total project cost (10% for Northeastern and Himalayan states). This approach balances financial responsibility across national and state levels, promoting sustainable development of disaster management systems.
Goals of the Fire Services Modernization Program
Launched in July 2023, the modernization program aims to improve India’s fire services with comprehensive goals, such as constructing new fire stations, upgrading existing ones, and equipping fire departments with advanced firefighting technology. State headquarters and urban fire stations are targeted for technological upgrades, which include installing online systems for better resource tracking and incident response. Additional funding incentives will support states making legal and infrastructural reforms in their fire safety policies, promoting a robust, risk-reduced environment.
This program is based on the recommendations of the Fifteenth Finance Commission and aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of creating a disaster-resilient India by fortifying disaster response capacities.
Strengthening Fire Safety for a Safer Future
The Centre’s approval of Rs 725 crore for fire service modernization in Odisha, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh marks a decisive step toward improving India’s disaster response capabilities. By building modern, well-equipped fire stations and advancing the training and infrastructure of state fire departments, the initiative reinforces a commitment to disaster preparedness and community safety. Through these enhancements, India moves closer to its goal of minimizing loss of life and property from fire-related incidents, paving the way for a safer, more resilient nation.
