ED Summons Mahesh Babu in ₹100-Crore Realty Scam: Glamour Meets Scrutiny

Superstar Mahesh Babu in the Eye of a Legal Storm

Mahesh Babu is not just a Tollywood icon—he’s a household name across India. Known for his charismatic screen presence, philanthropic image, and long list of box office hits, Mahesh has also become one of the most sought-after brand ambassadors in South India. But now, the superstar finds himself facing questions from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a high-profile money laundering case linked to shady dealings by real estate firms Surana Group and Sai Surya Developers.

The controversy has sent ripples through the Telugu film industry, with the ED summoning the actor for questioning on April 27 regarding his alleged financial links to the realty groups currently under investigation for defrauding investors.

The Brand Endorsement Angle: ₹11 Crore Under the Scanner

According to ED officials, Mahesh Babu received over ₹11 crore in promotional fees—₹5.5 crore from Surana Group and ₹5.9 crore from Sai Surya Developers—for appearing in advertising campaigns. These deals are now under scrutiny as part of the ED’s broader investigation into unaccounted cash transactions worth ₹100 crore and fraudulent land deals linked to the two firms.

The core question the ED appears to be asking: Were the payments made to Mahesh Babu sourced from proceeds of crime or laundered money?

The Larger Probe: Real Estate Scam and Investor Fraud

The Enforcement Directorate initiated the probe under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, following multiple FIRs filed by Telangana Police. The FIRs accused key figures including Narendra Surana of Bhagyanagar Properties and K. Sathish Chandra Gupta of Sai Surya Developers of defrauding investors.

The scam reportedly involved:

·       Selling unauthorized land layouts,

·       Re-selling the same plots to multiple buyers,

·       Collecting advances without legal agreements, and

·       Falsely assuring investors of registrations.

The ED believes these deceptive practices generated massive “proceeds of crime,” a portion of which may have been funnelled into brand endorsements and other activities.

Seizures and Evidence: Trail of Unaccounted Wealth

Searches conducted on April 17 at four locations in Hyderabad and Secunderabad led to the seizure of ₹74.5 lakh in cash and several incriminating documents, allegedly outlining unaccounted money collected from investors and spent or laundered via different channels.

While Mahesh Babu’s name is not linked to the fraud itself, the ED’s inquiry is expected to focus on whether he received payment from illegitimate sources and if due diligence was followed before accepting brand deals.

A Reminder of Responsibility Beyond Stardom

The developments mark a stark reminder that celebrity endorsements come with accountability. As public figures, stars like Mahesh Babu enjoy massive influence and trust—but that trust must be earned not only on-screen but off-screen too.

As the ED deepens its probe, Mahesh Babu’s response and cooperation could help clarify the legitimacy of his association with the embattled firms. For now, fans, investors, and the industry watch closely as the line between fame and finance is being examined under the lens of law.
