Authorities in Kandhamal district have implemented extensive security measures ahead of the dual observance of Janmashtami and the death anniversary of Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati on Monday. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader was tragically killed on August 23, 2008, along with four of his disciples, during the Janmashtami celebrations at his Jalespeta ashram. His assassination led to widespread violence that claimed the lives of 43 people and resulted in significant communal unrest.
Commemorative Events and Government Involvement
The anniversary of Saraswati’s death is expected to draw significant attention, with two senior ministers from the BJP government, Rabi Narayan Naik and Suryabansi Suraj, scheduled to attend the memorial event at the Jalespeta ashram. The ashram’s chief, Jiban Muktananda Pujari, confirmed their participation, indicating the event’s importance within the region.
Security Measures and Police Preparedness
In light of the sensitive nature of the occasion, Kandhamal’s security apparatus has been significantly reinforced. Southern Range DIG JN Pankaj, along with other senior police officials, visited the Jalespeta ashram on Sunday to assess and finalize security arrangements. Superintendent of Police Suvendu Kumar Patra stated that armed police personnel have been deployed across the district, with patrolling and checkpoint operations intensified in vulnerable areas.
Additional security has been concentrated around Saraswati’s two ashrams in Jalespeta and Chakapada. The authorities are leaving no stone unturned to ensure peace, especially given the violence that erupted following Saraswati’s killing 15 years ago. The district witnessed the destruction of 395 churches and the displacement of approximately 75,000 people during that period.
Community Engagement and Peace Initiatives
To maintain communal harmony, peace committee meetings have been organized, bringing together leaders from various communities, political figures, and other influential individuals. The administration has also employed public announcement systems to dispel rumors and reassure the populace of their safety during the observance of the anniversary.
Kandhamal’s Collector and District Magistrate, Amrit Rituraj, has assured residents that the administration is fully committed to ensuring a peaceful and secure environment during the celebrations. “We have kept strict vigil over the situation and assured people of the best of the service of the administration during the celebrations and nothing to be worried upon,” he stated, emphasizing the government’s dedication to preventing any disturbances.
As Kandhamal prepares to mark this significant day, the focus remains on upholding peace and ensuring that the tragic events of the past are not repeated.
