India’s ongoing efforts to enhance its domestic defense capabilities under the “Make in India” initiative have led to the development of the advanced Pinaka multi-barrel rocket system, which recently passed a critical flight test. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the system includes a launcher vehicle, command post, and resupply vehicles, allowing for a high degree of operational flexibility. Capable of firing 12 rockets within 44 seconds, the system can cover an area of 700 by 500 meters with destructive precision.
The guided version of Pinaka, which was the focus of recent tests, has introduced enhanced accuracy and extended range. With seeker technology, Pinaka now offers near-double the range of the initial version, reaching up to 60 km, with plans to achieve ranges beyond 120, 150, and even 200 km. A complete battery of Pinaka consists of six launchers capable of firing 72 rockets, ensuring sustained firepower over a large area. With its multi-target salvo mode, the system can engage various targets within seconds, providing critical support in high-stakes operations.
International Demand: Armenia and France Show Interest
Pinaka’s success has not gone unnoticed internationally, with Armenia and France actively pursuing the acquisition of the system. Armenia became the first international client, procuring Pinaka systems in 2023 amid ongoing tensions with Azerbaijan. The system’s reliability and firepower make it an ideal choice for nations facing regional conflicts or seeking a robust defensive capability.
France’s interest in Pinaka marks a significant step in Indo-French defense collaboration. France, India’s second-largest defense supplier, has recently strengthened its defense ties with New Delhi, evident in major deals like the Rafale fighter jet and Airbus C-295 transport aircraft agreements.
