Celebrities and Their Contribution to the Nation’s Coffers
In addition to entertaining millions, Indian celebrities contribute significantly to the nation’s economy through the taxes they pay. While their earnings may not always match those of industrialists or business magnates, stars from Bollywood and cricket frequently emerge as top taxpayers. Their contributions highlight not only their income but also their role in supporting public welfare programs funded by tax revenues.
For the 2023-24 financial year, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan emerged as India’s highest tax-paying celebrity, surpassing other household names like Virat Kohli, Salman Khan, and Akshay Kumar.
Shah Rukh Khan Leads with ₹92 Crore in Taxes
Shah Rukh Khan topped the list of India’s highest tax-paying celebrities by paying ₹92 crore in taxes during the last financial year, according to Fortune India. This achievement was fueled by his triumphant return to Bollywood in 2023 with three major releases:
· Pathaan (₹1000 crore gross worldwide)
· Jawan (₹1150 crore gross worldwide)
· Dunki (₹400 crore gross worldwide)
The cumulative success of these films made Shah Rukh not only the highest-paid actor of the year but also placed him miles ahead of other taxpaying celebrities.
Thalapathy Vijay: South Indian Cinema’s Representative
The second spot was claimed by Tamil superstar Vijay, popularly known as Thalapathy among fans. Vijay paid ₹80 crore in taxes for the 2023-24 fiscal year. His earnings were bolstered by the success of The Greatest of All Time, a film that grossed over ₹600 crore worldwide. Reports suggest Vijay was paid over ₹200 crore for this project, solidifying his place as one of India’s top earners.
Other Top Celebrity Taxpayers
The list of highest taxpayers included familiar names from Bollywood and cricket:

· Virat Kohli: ₹66 crore
Kareena Kapoor emerged as the highest-ranked female celebrity, paying ₹20 crore in taxes and securing a position just outside the top 10.
The Highest Celebrity Taxpayers in Recent Years
Over the past three years, Shah Rukh Khan and Virat Kohli have consistently been among the top taxpayers in their respective fields.
Film Industry: Shah Rukh Khan reclaimed the top spot in 2024, while Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar had dominated earlier years with consistent contributions ranging between ₹50-₹75 crore annually.

Celebrities as Nation Builders
While their public persona is often associated with glamour and fame, Indian celebrities also play a crucial role in nation-building by contributing substantial taxes. Stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Vijay serve as examples of how personal success can align with social responsibility.
