The KIIT Controversy
Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) and its associated medical wing, Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), have long been recognized as premier institutions in Odisha, offering world-class education and healthcare services. Founded by Achyuta Samanta, these institutions have received national and international acclaim. However, recent controversies surrounding unpaid taxes and allegations of land acquisition have put them in the spotlight for the wrong reasons. The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now issued notices to KIIT and KIMS over substantial unpaid holding tax dues, amounting to more than Rs 3 crore.
BMC’s Notice to KIIT and KIMS
On Wednesday, the BMC identified KIIT University and KIMS as significant tax defaulters. According to official reports, KIMS has outstanding dues exceeding Rs 2 crore, while KIIT University has more than Rs 1 crore in unpaid taxes. The municipal corporation has intensified its efforts to enforce tax compliance and ensure that civic obligations are met.
In response, a BMC official stated, “We urge all parties to settle their dues promptly. This ensures the continuous delivery of municipal services to the residents of Bhubaneswar.” However, both KIIT and KIMS have yet to issue a formal response regarding their unpaid taxes.
Land Scam Allegations Against Achyuta Samanta
In recent months, Achyuta Samanta has also faced allegations of illegal land acquisition, further intensifying the controversy surrounding him. Reports have surfaced accusing KIIT of encroaching on both government and private lands to expand its infrastructure. Media investigations have highlighted instances where land originally allocated for community use was allegedly transferred to institutions affiliated with Samanta through dubious means. Critics argue that these acquisitions were made without proper authorization, raising concerns about transparency and governance. While Samanta has denied any wrongdoing, the allegations have prompted calls for a government probe into the land deals associated with KIIT and its expansions.
Media Scrutiny and Achyuta Samanta’s Response
Despite the accusations, KIIT founder Achyuta Samanta has refrained from addressing the allegations of unpaid taxes and land acquisitions directly. Instead, he has seemingly directed his frustration toward media coverage of the controversy. In particular, Odisha Television Network (OTV) has been vocal about exposing alleged irregularities involving KIIT and KIMS.
In a press conference, alumni of the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), a sister concern of KIIT, defended Samanta and criticized OTV, even threatening its management, including Managing Director Jagi Mangat Panda and Lok Sabha MP Baijayant Panda. However, their statements failed to counter the media reports effectively, leaving many questions unanswered about the allegations against KIIT.
Achievements of Achyuta Samanta
Despite the controversy, Achyuta Samanta remains a highly decorated educationist and philanthropist. He is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Gusi Peace Prize, the ISA Award for Service to Humanity, and multiple honorary doctorates from esteemed institutions worldwide. His efforts in transforming education and social upliftment through KIIT and KISS have been widely recognized, earning him respect in academic and philanthropic circles.
Under his leadership, KIIT has grown into a globally recognized university, providing quality education across multiple disciplines. KISS, on the other hand, has empowered thousands of underprivileged tribal students, offering them free education, accommodation, and career opportunities. These accomplishments have cemented Samanta’s legacy as a visionary leader in the education sector.
What Lies Ahead for Achyuta Samanta?
While Achyuta Samanta’s contributions to education and social welfare are commendable, the recent allegations and tax disputes pose significant challenges. If KIIT and KIMS fail to address the unpaid tax dues and other legal concerns, his reputation may suffer a considerable blow. Whether he will successfully navigate this controversy and restore public trust remains to be seen. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining how this situation unfolds, and whether Samanta can clear his name while continuing his mission of education and social service.
