In a remarkable twist of fate, Raju Gond, a 40-year-old labourer from Madhya Pradesh, has unearthed a 19.22-carat diamond valued at nearly $100,000 (about Rs 83.7 lakh). Gond, who typically earns around Rs 350 a day to support his large family, has described this discovery as a life-altering event.
The Journey to Fortune
The story began two months ago when the monsoon season brought work opportunities to a halt. Gond and his brother Rakesh, facing financial strain, decided to search for diamonds on a 64-square-meter plot of government land in Krishna Kalyanpur. They had paid $9.50 a day to work at a shallow mine, following a process that included filling out forms, providing identification, and paying a small fee.
Their perseverance paid off on a Wednesday when Gond uncovered the diamond. Excitement surged as he cleaned the stone, revealing its brilliance. Gond described the moment with awe, saying the diamond’s sparkle confirmed its identity.
The Evaluation and Its Implications
The brothers quickly travelled 11 kilometers to share the news with their family before bringing the diamond to the local Panna Diamond Office. Anupam Singh, a diamond examiner, confirmed that the gem was a white diamond weighing 19.22 carats, valued at approximately $95,500.
Singh highlighted that Panna’s reputation for significant diamond finds continues with this discovery, following notable finds in 1961 and 2018. He explained that the government manages diamond mining through leases, receiving an 11.5% royalty and a small tax from any discoveries. The remaining amount goes to the finder.
Awaiting the Payout
The diamond office plans to auction its inventory once it exceeds $360,000. Currently, they have diamonds worth about half that amount, so Gond will need to wait until the auction to receive his share.
In the meantime, Gond is preparing for his newfound wealth. He has opened a bank account and plans to use the funds to settle his $6,000 debt, invest in his children’s education, build homes, purchase land, and possibly buy a tractor. His family, including his parents, wife, seven children, and extended relatives, has been struggling to make ends meet, making this discovery even more significant.
He remembers that during his childhood, his father and grandfathers used to tell him tales of individuals who discovered diamonds in the soil and how such finds transformed their families’ fortunes. Now, he reflects, he has a similar story of his own to tell.
Continuing the Search
Despite the life-changing find, Gond and Rakesh returned to the mine the next day, eager to continue their search. Gond expressed optimism about finding more diamonds, reflecting on stories from his childhood about people whose fortunes changed with a single discovery.
The brothers’ story underscores the transformative power of luck and determination, offering a glimmer of hope for many facing similar struggles. As they eagerly resume their search, the impact of Gond’s discovery will continue to resonate within their community and beyond.
