Enhanced Measures to Prevent Illegal Entry
In response to increasing concerns over unauthorized entries from Bangladesh, Odisha has significantly ramped up its coastal security measures. The state government has directed enhanced vigilance along its extensive 480-kilometer coastline to address potential threats of illegal immigration via sea routes.
Increased Patrols and Night Vigilance
The Odisha government has issued directives to superintendents of police across all coastal districts to intensify patrolling, especially during night time hours. This move aims to curb the entry of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, particularly in light of recent political unrest in the neighboring country. Sanjay Kumar, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), highlighted that past incidents have seen individuals using small boats to cross into Odisha illegally. With the recent turmoil in Bangladesh and the release of several criminals, there is heightened apprehension about potential cross-border activities.
“Our top priority is to prevent such entries,” Kumar asserted, addressing the growing security concerns prompted by the instability in Bangladesh. All 18 marine police stations along Odisha’s coast have been instructed to stay alert and closely monitor sea routes. The central government has also alerted the coast guards to bolster security measures. Kumar added that the superintendents of police in coastal districts and the ADG for coastal security are closely overseeing the situation.
Strategic Coordination and Monitoring
To better manage the situation, a 24×7 control room has been established in the office of the ADG for coastal security. This control room facilitates coordination with various agencies to ensure robust security along the coastline. Kumar emphasized the potential risk of criminal elements entering Odisha after committing offenses in their home country. Consequently, increased vigilance is mandated in coastal habitations to mitigate this risk.
The state is also collaborating closely with the Coast Guard and Navy to prevent illegal activities that could strain India-Bangladesh relations. Continuous monitoring of social media and other intelligence channels is crucial for gathering pertinent information.
Intensified Local Efforts
Superintendents of police in key coastal districts, including Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, and Bhadrak, have been instructed to heighten night patrols to deter illegal immigration. Local authorities, such as revenue inspectors and forest officials, are actively overseeing coastal villages for any suspicious activities.
Officials note that illegal immigrants from Bangladesh often enter Odisha via Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur, typically using fishing trawlers. Kendrapara district collector confirmed that, alongside strengthened police surveillance, revenue inspectors and forest officials are tasked with monitoring movements in coastal villages.
Collaborative Stakeholder Meetings
In light of the ongoing security concerns, Odisha’s Additional Chief Secretary (Home) has convened a recent meeting with key stakeholders to devise further strategies. This collaborative effort underscores the state’s commitment to addressing the challenges posed by potential illegal entries and ensuring coastal security.
Overall, Odisha’s intensified coastal vigilance reflects a proactive approach to safeguarding its borders and maintaining security in the face of external threats.
