Odisha Government’s Drive for Women’s Empowerment
In the first 100 days of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s leadership, Odisha has showcased its strong commitment to social welfare, particularly in empowering women. The newly formed government, staying true to its election promises, has rolled out several key initiatives, with Subhadra Yojana being one of the most prominent. This ambitious welfare scheme aims to provide financial assistance to over 1 crore women in the state, ensuring economic independence and fostering greater inclusivity.
The Subhadra Yojana, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his birthday, September 17, 2023, in Bhubaneswar, is a testament to Odisha’s focus on women-led development. Over 25 lakh women received their first financial installment on the launch day. Now, in its second phase, the state government has reached a new milestone by depositing Rs 5,000 each in the accounts of an additional 35 lakh women, making a total of 60 lakh beneficiaries so far.
Subhadra Yojana: Transforming Lives with Direct Financial Aid
The Subhadra Yojana, one of the key commitments made by the BJP in its Sankalp Patra (election manifesto), aims to uplift women across Odisha by providing them with direct financial support. Under this scheme, each woman beneficiary receives Rs 10,000 annually in two installments of Rs 5,000 each. The first installment is distributed on Rakhi Purnima, while the second is disbursed on International Women’s Day (March 8). The scheme runs for five years, ensuring continued financial assistance to the beneficiaries.
On Wednesday, Chief Minister Mohan Majhi disbursed the second phase of the first installment at a special event held at Chhau Ground in Baripada. During the event, Majhi expressed his government’s dedication to fulfilling promises, calling the Subhadra Yojana the “biggest welfare scheme in Odisha.”
“We have disbursed Rs 1,750 crore today, and a total of Rs 3,000 crore so far, benefitting 35 lakh women in this phase alone,” Majhi stated, reinforcing the scheme’s significant impact.
A Historic Initiative with Unprecedented Reach
Speaking at the event, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida termed the scheme “historic,” noting its vast scale and reach. Over 1.6 crore registration forms have been distributed for the Subhadra Yojana, out of which 1.5 crore women have successfully registered. “Never before has a scheme included over 1 crore women in such a short time,” Parida highlighted.
She further added that in the first phase, 25.11 lakh women were given assistance, while 35 lakh received the funds in this latest phase. Women who were excluded from the first round due to various reasons, and applied by October 7, also received their share in the second phase.
Empowering Women for Economic Independence
For many of the women receiving these funds, the Subhadra Yojana is more than just financial aid—it is an opportunity to enhance their livelihoods. With the funds provided, numerous beneficiaries plan to start small businesses, support their families, or invest in essential needs. One woman said, “I will use the money to start a small business and make myself self-sufficient.” Another beneficiary expressed her happiness, saying, “I am delighted after receiving the assistance. This is a big relief for my family.”
This direct financial support is designed to empower women in rural and urban areas alike, enabling them to become financially independent and contribute to their households and communities. It also aligns with the larger vision of the state government to encourage women’s participation in the economy and promote sustainable livelihoods.
A Promise Kept, A Step Forward for Odisha
The Subhadra Yojana is a critical part of the BJP government’s broader agenda of inclusive development in Odisha. This initiative has become a beacon of hope for millions of women who now have a safety net and a stepping stone towards a more secure and independent future.
Chief Minister Majhi emphasized the role of the “double engine government” in delivering rapid development and fulfilling promises made to the people of Odisha. “The double engine government brings double the benefits and double the development,” he said, referring to the state and central governments working together to implement welfare schemes effectively.
Continued Support for Women’s Empowerment
As Odisha continues its journey of growth and progress, the Subhadra Yojana remains a flagship initiative symbolizing the government’s commitment to women’s empowerment. With Rs 3,000 crore already disbursed and more to come, the scheme is set to impact the lives of over 1 crore women over the next five years.
The Odisha government’s focus on ensuring financial independence for women will play a significant role in the state’s development, helping women from diverse backgrounds improve their economic conditions and lead more empowered lives. With the Subhadra Yojana, Odisha is leading the way in creating a future where women are not just beneficiaries of development but active participants and contributors to the state’s prosperity.
