Honouring Utkal Keshari’s Legacy
The Odisha government has announced a year-long celebration in honor of the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab, popularly known as Utkal Keshari for his tireless dedication to the people and heritage of Odisha. Dr. Mahatab, an iconic nationalist leader, left an indelible mark on Odisha’s political, social, and cultural landscape. Born on November 21, 1899, and passing in 1987, his contributions are revered across the state, and the upcoming year will see a series of commemorative events, educational initiatives, and memorial projects to honor his life and legacy.
State-wide Celebrations and Programs
The celebrations will commence with a three-day inaugural event in Bhubaneswar from November 21 to 23, featuring speeches, cultural programs, and exhibitions highlighting Dr. Mahatab’s life. The state has proposed to produce a biopic on him, which will be screened in schools and colleges, ensuring that younger generations learn about his contributions. A national conference, scheduled for November 23–25 in Bhubaneswar, will bring together scholars and public figures to discuss Dr. Mahatab’s impact on Odisha and the country.
Memorials and Educational Initiatives
One of the key initiatives involves establishing a memorial museum at Dr. Mahatab’s birthplace in Agarpada, Bhadrak, along with a statue and tourist amenities to make it a place of public homage. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced plans for sub-committees to organize programs across the state, including reprints of Dr. Mahatab’s books in Hindi, English, and other languages. Additionally, a comprehensive multi-volume work on his life and achievements is under development.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan highlighted the opportunity to promote Odia asmita, or pride, over the next decade as the state approaches its centennial in 2036. He emphasized that Dr. Mahatab’s life serves as a powerful embodiment of Odia unity and resilience, ideals that are especially relevant as the state celebrates its centenary.
Promoting Dr. Mahatab’s Vision and Works
Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab outlined Dr. Mahatab’s contributions across four key areas: as a freedom fighter, administrator, social reformer, and cultural unifier. The MP proposed establishing memorials in Hadgarh and Bhubaneswar to inspire future generations and introducing Dr. Mahatab’s literary and dramatic works throughout the state. Plans also include state museum exhibitions featuring his writings, photographs, and paintings.
In addition, universities will establish dedicated “Dr. Mahatab Chairs” for research, and lectures, seminars, and essay competitions at school, college, and university levels will be held. Special seminars in major cities like Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai will further highlight his national impact.
A Lasting Legacy
Dr. Mahatab’s life and work have become symbolic of Odisha’s resilience and pride, and these year-long celebrations will serve as both a tribute to his legacy and a rekindling of Odia identity. The year ahead promises a renewed commitment to preserving his contributions, fostering pride in Odia heritage, and inspiring the people of Odisha to carry forward his vision of a prosperous and a united state.
