Odisha Pays Tribute to Utkal Gourav Madhusudan Das on His 177th Birth Anniversary

Leaders and Citizens Unite in Tribute

Across Odisha, political leaders, cultural organisations, and citizens came together on Monday to pay homage to Utkal Gourav Madhusudan Das on his 177th birth anniversary. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik, and leaders from various parties participated in floral tribute ceremonies at Raj Bhavan Square and other prominent locations.

Known affectionately as Madhu Babu, Madhusudan Das remains an enduring symbol of Odia pride. He holds the distinction of being the first Odia to earn a Master’s degree from Calcutta University, the first to serve on the Legislative Council, and a member of the Central Legislative Assembly. His pioneering contributions to education, politics, and industry have left an indelible mark on Odisha’s history.

Madhusudan Das: Architect of Odia Identity

Born in 1848 in Satyabhamapur, Cuttack district, Madhusudan Das dedicated his life to the unification and upliftment of Odia-speaking regions. As the founder of Utkal Sammilani, he spearheaded the movement that ultimately led to the creation of a separate Odisha province in 1936, based on linguistic identity — a revolutionary idea at the time.

Apart from his political activism, Madhusudan Das was a visionary entrepreneur. Recognising the need for industrial growth, he established the Utkal Tannery, investing his personal wealth to empower local industries. His efforts to foster indigenous entrepreneurship set the foundation for Odisha’s early industrialisation.

Madhu Babu’s multifaceted contributions earned him titles like Kula Bruddha (Grand Old Man) and Utkal Gourav (Pride of Odisha). Today, he is revered not only as a political leader but also as a social reformer, lawyer, poet, and nation-builder.

Calls for Bharat Ratna and National Monument Status

At the state-level celebrations in Salipur, prominent voices demanded that Madhusudan Das be posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour. They also urged the Union Government to declare his birthplace at Satyabhamapur as a national monument to recognise his immense contributions to the nation and Odisha.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, during his tribute, highlighted the state’s commitment to realising Madhu Babu’s vision. “Our government is working hard to meet the goals set by Madhu Babu. His dream of a prosperous, self-reliant Odisha continues to guide us,” Majhi remarked.

Similarly, BJD President and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik posted a tribute on social media platform X, describing Madhusudan Das as a “symbol of Odia pride” and an “everlasting source of inspiration” for his role in protecting Odia language, culture, and identity.

Political and Cultural Observances Across Odisha

Separate ceremonies and meetings were organised by political parties including the Congress, BJD, and BJP to honour Madhusudan Das’s contributions. Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Bhakta Charan Das reflected on Madhubabu’s enduring literary contributions, noting how his poetry in Odia remains relevant for awakening socio-political consciousness even today.

Leaders such as Ashok Panda, Lekhashree Samantsinghar, and Speaker of Odisha Assembly Surama Padhy were among many who offered tributes. Beyond political events, cultural organisations and educational institutions across the state organised discussions, seminars, and exhibitions celebrating Madhusudan Das’s life and achievements.

The Odisha government announced that commemorative programmes will continue throughout the week, involving educational campaigns, essay competitions, and public forums to engage younger generations in understanding Madhusudan Das’s legacy.

A Legacy of Vision, Courage, and Service

Madhusudan Das’s life exemplifies vision, resilience, and unwavering dedication to public service. His commitment to justice, linguistic pride, and economic self-sufficiency laid the blueprint for modern Odisha. His work remains especially relevant today, when regional identities are being reassessed in a fast-globalising world.

As Odisha celebrates the 177th birth anniversary of Utkal Gourav, it is not merely a tribute to a historical figure but a reminder of the power of leadership rooted in selfless service. The call for greater national recognition, such as conferring the Bharat Ratna, reflects a collective desire to honour a man whose life’s work transcended his time, leaving behind a vibrant legacy that continues to shape Odisha’s destiny.
