A Land of Timeless Culture
Odisha, often described as the land of temples and traditions, is a treasure trove of cultural and historical wealth. With monuments that date back centuries, intricate architecture, and a living legacy of art and spirituality, the state has long been regarded as a custodian of India’s civilisational glory. Recognising this heritage as both a cultural responsibility and a developmental opportunity, the Odisha government is preparing to unveil a dedicated Heritage Policy, placing particular emphasis on 75 significant heritage sites.
Blueprint for Conservation
Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida highlighted that Odisha is home to more than 3,000 heritage monuments, some of which trace their origins to as early as the 9th century BC. Many of these historic marvels, however, are in urgent need of attention due to structural wear, missing idols, and decades of neglect. The forthcoming Heritage Policy seeks to create a systematic framework for conservation, restoration, and sustained management of these monuments.
A high-level consultation was recently convened with ministers from the Works, Culture, and Tourism departments, alongside officials from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the State Archaeological Department. The dialogue focused on ensuring that the policy integrates scientific preservation methods with strategies to enhance accessibility and visitor experience.
A Task Force for Heritage Protection
To give momentum to the initiative, the government plans to constitute a dedicated task force comprising the Culture, Works, and Tourism departments. This body will not only monitor restoration work but also guide infrastructure development in and around heritage sites. From safeguarding ancient temples to restoring sculptures and carvings, the task force will serve as a nodal point for coordination between different agencies.
Deputy Chief Minister Parida noted that several temples have lost vital features such as idols and decorative elements, underscoring the urgency of careful restoration. The task force’s role will extend to ensuring authenticity in repair work while maintaining the cultural essence of the monuments.
Infrastructure and Tourist-Friendly Amenities
Beyond preservation, the policy underscores the importance of making heritage sites more welcoming and accessible to visitors. Plans are in motion to improve approach roads, install proper lighting, enhance security, and provide basic amenities such as drinking water and rest areas. These developments aim to make exploration of Odisha’s cultural treasures both safe and memorable for domestic and international tourists.
The initiative will not remain confined to large, well-known monuments alone. Smaller village-based heritage sites, which often embody local history and craftsmanship, are also slated for inclusion. By broadening the scope, the government intends to celebrate not only monumental architecture but also grassroots cultural expressions.

The official rollout of the Heritage Policy and task force is expected soon. Once operational, this framework has the potential to significantly strengthen Odisha’s cultural tourism sector while preserving its historical wealth for future generations.
