A New Era for Odisha’s Mining Sector
Odisha is on the brink of a mining revolution with the discovery of substantial gold reserves across multiple districts. These findings mark a significant milestone in the state’s economic and industrial landscape, positioning Odisha as a potential gold mining hub. Historically, India’s primary gold production has been concentrated in Karnataka’s Kolar and Hutti mines. However, with these recent discoveries, Odisha is set to challenge the status quo.
Gold Reserves Discovered Across Multiple Districts
State Steel and Mines Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena announced in the Odisha Legislative Assembly that large gold deposits have been identified in Sundargarh, Nabarangpur, Angul, and Koraput districts. Preliminary surveys further indicate the presence of gold in Malkangiri, Sambalpur, and Boudh. These findings could place Odisha among India’s leading gold-producing states.
Exploration efforts are also ongoing in Mayurbhanj, particularly in Jashipur, Suriaguda, Ruaansi, Idelkucha, Maredihi, Suleipat, and Badampahad. Similarly, in Deogarh’s Adasa-Rampalli region, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) identified gold deposits while exploring for copper. Keonjhar has also emerged as a potential gold-rich district, with surveys being conducted in Gopur-Gazipur, Mankadchuan, Saleikana, and Dimirimunda.
Historical Context: Past Gold Exploration in India
Gold mining in India has a long history, with notable past discoveries in Karnataka’s Kolar Gold Fields, which were operational for over a century before closure. Hutti Gold Mines in Karnataka remains India’s primary operational gold mining region. Other states, including Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh, have also reported gold reserves. Odisha’s new findings could redefine the country’s gold mining industry by expanding production beyond its traditional strongholds.
Odisha’s First Gold Mining Auction and Future Prospects
In a landmark move, Odisha is preparing to auction its first gold mining block in Deogarh. The GSI and Odisha Mining Corporation are collaborating to assess gold extraction feasibility in Keonjhar. Once exploration reports are finalized, the government will proceed with commercial mining operations. Additional surveys are ongoing in Mayurbhanj and Deogarh, with results expected soon.
The assessment of gold deposits in Keonjhar’s Gopur-Gazipur region is still underway, and their commercial viability will determine future auctions. If these reserves are substantial, Odisha could attract significant investments from both domestic and international mining companies.
A Transformative Opportunity for Odisha
The discovery of gold reserves in Odisha presents an unprecedented opportunity for economic growth, job creation, and industrial development. If harnessed effectively, Odisha could emerge as a gold mining powerhouse, contributing significantly to India’s mineral wealth. With strategic planning and responsible mining practices, these discoveries have the potential to transform the state’s economic landscape for generations to come.
