Zakir Naik and His Troubled Relationship with India
Zakir Naik, a controversial Islamic preacher, rose to prominence through his sermons, which many followers found compelling. However, Naik has also been the subject of multiple accusations in India, including charges of money laundering and inciting extremism through hate speeches. He fled India in 2016 and has since lived in exile, primarily in Malaysia, where the government under Mahathir Mohamed granted him permanent residency. India’s repeated attempts to secure his extradition have been unsuccessful, though Malaysia recently hinted that they might reconsider. Now, Naik’s month-long visit to Pakistan has raised fresh concerns in India.
Shehbaz Sharif Praises Naik’s “Insightful” Lectures
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently met with Zakir Naik and commended his lectures, describing them as “insightful and impactful.” Sharif praised Naik for spreading what he called “the true message of Islam” and highlighted the preacher’s popularity, especially among younger audiences. The meeting, widely covered by state-run media such as Radio Pakistan, signals a warm reception for Naik in Pakistan.
In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Naik shared his interactions with the Pakistani leader, posting a picture of their meeting. According to Naik, Sharif emphasized Islam as a religion of peace and acknowledged Naik’s efforts in promoting this message. Naik also met with other Pakistani leaders, including the speaker of the National Assembly, further cementing his ties with the country’s political leadership.
Naik’s Return to Pakistan After Three Decades
Naik’s visit to Pakistan is particularly noteworthy as it marks his first trip to the country in over 30 years. His last visit, in 1992, saw him meet with religious scholar Dr. Israr Ahmed in Lahore before returning to India. This current month-long visit will take him across major cities such as Karachi, Islamabad, and Lahore, where he is scheduled to deliver a series of lectures.
Naik arrived in Pakistan to a red-carpet welcome and full-proof security provided by the government. The Ministry of Religious Affairs, along with PM’s aide Rana Mashhood, greeted him upon his arrival at Islamabad International Airport, further emphasizing the level of support and protection afforded to the preacher during his stay.
India’s Concerns and Extradition Requests
Zakir Naik remains a highly controversial figure in India. He has been accused of promoting extremism and is wanted for money laundering charges. Since leaving India in 2016, he has been a subject of several extradition requests by the Indian government. However, Malaysia, where Naik has enjoyed permanent residency, has resisted these requests. During a recent visit to New Delhi, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim hinted that Malaysia might reconsider Naik’s extradition if India provides substantial evidence against him.
Naik’s visit to Pakistan has heightened concerns in India, as his activities remain under close scrutiny. His lectures, often broadcast to large audiences, continue to generate both support and controversy, particularly regarding his views on religious issues.
Naik’s Polarizing Influence
Zakir Naik’s influence remains polarizing. While leaders like Shehbaz Sharif praise his message, many view him as a figure who stokes division. His month-long visit to Pakistan is likely to amplify these differing perceptions. As India continues its efforts to bring Naik to justice, his relationship with countries like Pakistan and Malaysia complicates the process, leaving the future of his controversial legacy uncertain.
