Persistent High Potato Prices in Odisha Despite New Stock Arrival

Consumers Struggle with High Potato Costs

Odisha residents are facing continued challenges with high potato prices, even though new stock has begun arriving from West Bengal. Despite efforts to stabilize the market, retail prices for this essential commodity remain elevated. On Saturday, while there was a marginal drop in prices, they still ranged between Rs 40 and Rs 50 per kilogram, leaving consumers concerned.

Local residents have expressed frustration with the persistent high prices. One consumer said, “We urge the Odisha government to take steps so that we get potatoes at cheaper rates.” The ongoing fluctuations in price have made it difficult for people to manage their grocery expenses, highlighting the need for effective measures to control costs.

Supply Chain Disruptions and Market Instability

The arrival of new potato shipments has not yet resolved the price issues. Traders report that about 20 to 21 truckloads of potatoes have reached Odisha, with prices at Aiginia godown around Rs 29 to Rs 30 per kilogram. However, due to inadequate regulation in the retail market, consumers are still encountering high prices.

A trader at Aiginia voiced concerns about market practices, suggesting that political factors might be contributing to the price hikes. He noted that trucks transporting potatoes from Uttar Pradesh to Assam via West Bengal have been detained, further complicating the supply chain. This disruption has led to inconsistencies in pricing and availability.

Government’s Relief Measures

To address the ongoing price crisis, the Odisha government has introduced a relief measure for consumers in Bhubaneswar. The Food Supplies & Consumer Welfare Department has launched a scheme to provide three kilograms of potatoes for Rs 100. This initiative aims to help alleviate the financial burden on residents facing inflated prices.

As part of this scheme, local dealers have been given 10 packets of potatoes each to distribute. Ration card holders and other eligible individuals can purchase the subsidized potatoes through these dealers. The government has indicated that this distribution will continue until market prices stabilize, with adequate stock having been secured to meet demand.

This intervention reflects the state’s commitment to mitigating the impact of high potato prices on consumers. By providing affordable potatoes, the government hopes to stabilize the market and ensure that essential food items remain accessible to all residents.
