At the 13th Graduation Ceremony of the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) in Bhubaneswar, President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, underscored the importance of ethical considerations in scientific endeavors. Praising NISER for its swift ascent in the educational domain, she commended its blend of scientific rationality and traditional values.
The President is on a three-day visit to Odisha.
President Murmu’s address to the graduates centered on the significance of applying their education for the welfare of humanity. She expressed faith in their ability to excel and encouraged them to act with social responsibility. Referencing Mahatma Gandhi’s warning against “merciless science,” she reminded the students of the ethical dimensions of scientific progress.
She urged the graduates to retain their humility and curiosity, viewing their knowledge as a tool for societal improvement. President Murmu also discussed the rapid advancements in science and technology, such as CRISPR-Cas9 and Generative Artificial Intelligence, acknowledging their potential while highlighting the accompanying ethical and regulatory challenges.
Drawing attention to the perseverance required in fundamental scientific research, President Murmu advised the students to remain steadfast and patient, stressing that fundamental research often leads to valuable advancements in other fields.
