As the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the globe, prompting a renewed interest in traditional medicine and herbal remedies, the residents of Jhurimal seized the opportunity to reconnect with their natural surroundings. Amidst the uncertainty and challenges of lockdowns, they turned a barren patch of land into a thriving garden of healing, nurturing the seeds of hope amidst adversity.
With unwavering determination and a deep-seated love for the environment, the villagers of Jhurimal embarked on this journey of regeneration, relying solely on their labor and ingenuity. Undeterred by the lack of government assistance, they took it upon themselves to create ‘Sanjeevani Vatika’—a testament to their commitment to preserving indigenous knowledge and biodiversity.
What began as a modest initiative with just 50 varieties of trees has blossomed into a lush oasis boasting over 100 medicinal plants. From the revered Harida and Bahada to the humble Amla and Black pepper, the garden is a treasure trove of traditional wisdom and natural remedies. Each plant serves as a living testament to the rich heritage of Ayurveda, offering not just physical healing but also spiritual nourishment.
Beyond its therapeutic value, ‘Sanjeevani Vatika’ holds a deeper significance for the community of Jhurimal. Despite facing challenges such as water scarcity, the community remains steadfast in their commitment to sustainability. Plans are underway to construct an open well to provide a reliable water source for the garden, further solidifying its status as a bastion of green resilience in the heart of Sundergarh.
The inauguration of ‘Sanjeevani Vatika’ marked a historic moment for the village, signifying the culmination of months of hard work and dedication. Sundargarh divisional forest officer Pradeep Mirase, who officiated the ceremony, commended the community for their exemplary initiative, hailing it as a model for grassroots conservation efforts.
International recognition soon followed, with renowned environmental scientist Pradeep Patel from the USA commending the efforts of the Jhurimal community during his visits. He lauded their unity, fraternity, and innovative spirit, declaring ‘Sanjeevani Vatika’ as an inspiration for the global diaspora.
