Sarojini Sahoo to Receive 45th Sarala Puraskar for Notable Literary Achievement

Renowned feminist writer Sarojini Sahoo has been selected to receive the prestigious 45th Sarala Puraskar, a significant literary honor awarded annually by the Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust (IMPaCT), the charitable wing of Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys Ltd (IMFA). Sahoo will be recognized for her outstanding contribution to Odia literature, particularly for her acclaimed novel, Asthira Pada, published in 2019.

Introduction to Sarala Puraskar and the Trust

The Sarala Puraskar, established in 1980 by Dr. Bansidhar Panda and his wife Ila Panda, is one of the most prestigious literary awards in Odisha. It aims to acknowledge and honor literary excellence in the Odia language. Since its inception, the award has been managed by IMPaCT, reflecting the trust’s dedication to promoting literature, arts, and culture in the state.

Each year, the award recognizes the finest literary work published in Odia. The Sarala Puraskar carries a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, along with a commemorative plaque, making it a symbol of significant achievement in the Odia literary community.

Sarojini Sahoo: The Winner and Her Novel

Sarojini Sahoo, an eminent feminist writer known for her bold and thought-provoking works, has been selected for this year’s Sarala Puraskar for her novel Asthira Pada. The novel, published by Srujan India in 2019, delves deep into complex social issues, especially from a feminist perspective. Sahoo is celebrated for her unique narrative style and ability to address difficult subjects such as gender inequality, identity, and social norms, making her a vital voice in contemporary Odia literature.

Sahoo’s selection highlights her continued impact on the literary world and her commitment to challenging societal norms through her writing. Her previous works have garnered critical acclaim, and Asthira Pada is a continuation of her strong feminist stance in literature.

Other Finalists and Selection Process

In addition to Sahoo’s Asthira Pada, several other notable works made it to the final round of consideration. These included Agni Kamalini by Aparna Mohanty, Aprastuta Mrutyu by Ashutosh Parida, Abadharita O Anyanya Galpa by Dash Benhur, Kankana Dasi Katha by Bijay Kumar Satpathi, Maya by Biyot Projna Tripathy, and Sita Mun Sita by Padmaj Paul.

The selection process involved two stages, with preliminary judges including Dr. Biranchi Kumar Sahoo, Dr. Pragyan Prabartika Dash, and Madhusudan Dash. The final round was overseen by an esteemed panel, including Dr. Bhagaban Jayasingh and Prof. Kalidas Mishra, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of the literary contributions.

Lifetime Achievement in Arts: Ila-Bansidhar Panda Kala Samman

Alongside the Sarala Puraskar, the Ila-Bansidhar Panda Kala Samman, another esteemed award presented by IMPaCT, has also been announced for the year 2024. This award recognizes lifetime excellence in the fields of art and music. This year, renowned sculptor Sudarshan Sahoo and celebrated singer Tansen Singh will receive the honor, which includes a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and a plaque.

The Kala Samman reflects IMPaCT’s broader commitment to nurturing artistic excellence beyond literature. Judges for the music section included Susmita Das, Ratikant Satpathy, and Sarat Nayak, while the art section was evaluated by Panchami Manoo Ukil, Satyabhushan Hota, and Birendra Pani.

Awards Ceremony

The Sarala Puraskar and the Ila-Bansidhar Panda Kala Samman will be presented during a grand ceremony scheduled for October 26, 2024, in Bhubaneswar. These awards continue to highlight the exceptional talents contributing to the cultural and artistic landscape of Odisha.
