Surgeons Remove 77 Needles from Teen’s Skull in Odisha

Surgeons at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla, Odisha, removed 77 needles from the skull of 19-year-old Reshma Behera. Reshma, from Ichgaon, was admitted with severe headaches. This led to the shocking discovery.

Surgical Procedures

Director Bhabagrahi Rath reported that 70 needles were removed in the first surgery. An additional seven needles were retrieved in a follow-up procedure. The needles caused soft tissue injuries but did not damage the bone.

Ongoing Care

Reshma remains under observation for other potential health issues. Doctors will conduct a thorough diagnosis to rule out psychological causes. Reshma is expected to stay under post-operative care for about a week.

Background of the Incident

Reshma’s ordeal began after her mother’s death four years ago. Frequently ill, she sought help from a sorcerer in 2021. The family recently discovered the needles when Reshma experienced pain. Initial treatment at Bhima Bhoi Medical College revealed multiple needles in her head. This prompted her transfer to VIMSAR for extensive surgery.

Police Investigation

The Odisha police have initiated an inquiry into the case. A quack has been arrested in connection with the incident. The investigation aims to uncover if there are other victims of similar needle piercings by the accused.
