Dali Das, hailing from Sakhigopal in Puri, Odisha, has carved a niche for herself with her exquisite craftsmanship using coir, the eco-friendly fiber derived from coconut husks. Through intricate tying and folding techniques, she transforms coir into beautiful décor pieces, toys, ornaments, and more. Her journey to national recognition gained significant momentum when she received a special work order from none other than Nita Ambani, the founder of Reliance Industries.
Last year, Dali was contacted by Reliance’s Mumbai office to create a unique 5-foot-long palm tree made entirely from coir for Nita Ambani. This project not only showcased Dali’s exceptional skill and creativity but also underscored her journey from humble beginnings to achieving national acclaim.
Reflecting on her entrepreneurial path, Dali shared, “Nature offers boundless treasures, and the coconut tree is a prime example. From nourishing us with coconut water and oil to providing materials for gourmet delicacies, every part of the coconut is valuable. Coconut husk, or coir, finds versatile applications in mattresses, decorative items, bags, and ropes.”
Dali’s journey into entrepreneurship began out of necessity. After facing difficulties securing employment following her graduation, she turned to coir crafting to support her family. “After my father passed away, I became the eldest and had to take care of my siblings. Failing to secure a job despite my efforts compelled me to explore coir crafting. The initial days were challenging, but perseverance paid off as orders gradually started coming in,” she recalled.
Beyond her entrepreneurial endeavors, Dali is actively involved in societal contributions. She employs individuals who are differently-abled in her company, providing them with meaningful work and a source of income. Additionally, Dali serves as a faculty member at the State Institute for Development of Arts & Crafts, where she mentors aspiring artisans in the art of coir crafting.
Dali’s commitment to inclusivity and empowerment is evident in her efforts to support individuals like Rinku Pradhan and Soumyajit Lenka, who are differently-abled. They contribute to her craft-making process, showcasing their talents and gaining greater self-reliance under her mentorship. However, Dali acknowledges the challenges they face, emphasizing the importance of government support to enhance their quality of life.
Reflecting on her experience with the Reliance project, Dali expressed gratitude for the opportunity and highlighted her determination to deliver quality despite health setbacks. “Receiving a call from Reliance was overwhelming. I am eager to complete the project soon and continue creating opportunities for those around me,” she added.
