Odisha’s Infrastructure Expansion: Major Boost for Railways and Roads

Railway Projects to Transform Odisha’s Connectivity

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has extended heartfelt thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw following the approval of six major railway projects designed to revitalize the state’s rail infrastructure. In a recent update on his X handle, CM Majhi lauded the central government’s commitment to Odisha’s development, highlighting the significant impact these projects will have on the state’s transportation network and economic growth.

“On behalf of the people of Odisha, I would like to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for approving six major railway projects to develop Odisha railways,” said Majhi. He noted that these projects are not only aimed at strengthening the railway infrastructure but also at fostering development in the aspirational and tribal areas of the state. “Under the double engine government, the interests of 4.5 million Odiyans will be fulfilled, and the vision of making Odisha a hub of Eastern development will be realized.”

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Modi, has sanctioned eight railway projects with a combined estimated cost of around Rs. 24,657 crore. Of these, four projects are exclusively focused on Odisha, while two others extend into the state. The key projects for Odisha include:

Gunupur-Therubali Line (73.62 km): This new line will enhance connectivity in the Rayagada district, improving access to remote areas.

Junagarh-Nabarangpur Line (116.21 km): Connecting Kalahandi and Nabarangpur districts, this line is set to boost economic activities and accessibility in these regions.

Badampahar-Kendujhargarh Line (82.06 km): This project will serve Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts, facilitating better transportation and regional integration.

Bangriposi-Gorumahisani Line (85.60 km): Focused on the Mayurbhanj district, this line aims to enhance local connectivity and support economic growth.

Road Infrastructure Developments for Enhanced Connectivity

In addition to the railway projects, the Odisha government is advancing plans for significant road infrastructure improvements. The state has approved the development of two major six-lane highways, designed to alleviate congestion and streamline travel. These projects include:

Bhubaneswar-Puri Highway (NH-316): The upgrade will transform this critical route into a six-lane access-controlled highway, complete with two-lane service roads on both sides. This will greatly improve travel efficiency between Bhubaneswar and Puri, two major urban centers.

Barbil-Chandikhole Road: Similar to the Bhubaneswar-Puri upgrade, this road will be expanded to six lanes, with access-controlled features and service roads, addressing increasing traffic demands and improving connectivity in the region.

The Works Department Special Secretary, Laxmikant Padhi, has formally requested the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for these road upgrades. In his correspondence, Padhi emphasized the importance of a comprehensive presentation to the Chief Secretary for final alignment and controlled access points.

Padhi’s letter also urged the NHAI to expedite the implementation process, aiming to ensure a smooth, congestion-free journey for commuters on these key routes. This move follows the NHAI’s proposal to address the growing traffic volumes on these essential highways.

The combined efforts in enhancing both railway and road infrastructure are poised to significantly improve connectivity across Odisha. These projects are expected to drive economic growth, enhance the quality of travel, and contribute to the overall development of the state, further positioning Odisha as a key player in Eastern India’s growth trajectory.
