The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has achieved a remarkable milestone, surpassing all previous records of Indian Railways by loading 250 million tonnes of freight in the fiscal year 2023-24. Making the announcement today, the Ministry of Railways hailed ECoR’s unparalleled achievement, marking the first time a railway zone in India has accomplished such a feat in a single financial year.

This achievement underscores ECoR’s consistent excellence, as it becomes the first railway zone to surpass the 200 million tonnes milestone for the fifth consecutive time. The Ministry emphasized the significance of this accomplishment, highlighting ECoR’s pivotal role in India’s freight transportation landscape.

During the 2023-24 financial year, ECoR demonstrated robust performance across various freight categories. Notably, the railway zone loaded 149.50 million tonnes of coal, 12.9 million tonnes of raw materials for steel plants, 20.15 million tonnes of steel and slag, 37.4 million tonnes of iron ore, and significant quantities of other commodities including cement, food grains, fertilizers, and mineral oil. This impressive performance represents a 6% increase compared to the corresponding period in the previous year.

ECoR’s success is further underscored by the outstanding performance of its three divisions. The Khurda Road Division led the charge, loading 156.17 million tonnes of freight, followed by the Waltair Division with 74.66 million tonnes, and the Sambalpur Division contributing 19.20 million tonnes.
