A Legacy in Organic Farming and Indigenous Crop Conservation
Padma Shri Kamala Pujari passed away at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack due to a cardiac arrest. The hospital officials confirmed her death on Saturday, marking the end of an era for a woman whose work significantly impacted organic farming and the conservation of indigenous crop varieties.
Health Struggles and Hospitalization
Kamala Pujari was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital two days prior to her death, battling health-related issues. She had a long history of kidney ailments and had undergone treatment at the hospital multiple times. Recently, she had undergone dialysis and was not consuming food, which led to a cardiac arrest early on the day of her passing. Despite the efforts of a dedicated four-member medical team, she could not be revived.
Pioneering Contributions to Organic Agriculture
Kamala Pujari, a tribal woman from Koraput, was celebrated for her pioneering work in organic farming. She dedicated her life to preserving native paddy varieties, earning her the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2019. Pujari’s commitment to sustainable agriculture and biodiversity was evident in her extensive work with indigenous crops.
Promoting Organic Farming and Biodiversity
Pujari’s work extended beyond the preservation of paddy varieties. She successfully preserved over 100 varieties of paddy and many types of turmeric, cumin, and other crops. Pujari travelled barefoot to numerous villages, educating farmers, especially women, about organic farming practices and the use of organic fertilizers. Her grassroots approach helped spread sustainable farming techniques across various regions.
International Recognition and Awards
In 2002, Pujari’s efforts were internationally recognized when she received the Equator Initiative Award in Johannesburg, South Africa. This accolade highlighted her significant contributions to organic agriculture and the conservation of biodiversity on a global stage.
State and National Recognition
In addition to the Padma Shri, Pujari received several other honors. In 2004, the Odisha government named her the Best Woman Farmer, recognizing her exceptional contributions to agriculture. She was awarded the national Krusi Bisarada Samman in New Delhi, further acknowledging her impact on Indian agriculture.
State Honours
Following her passing, tributes poured in from various quarters. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi expressed his deep grief and announced that Pujari’s last rites would be performed with full state honors. He described her as an extraordinary woman with unique talents, highlighting her immense contributions to agriculture and environmental protection. “Her contribution towards environment protection was immense, which Odisha and the nation can never forget,” he said.
Baijayant Panda, BJP National Vice-President and Kendrapara MP, tweeted, “I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the demise of Padma Shri Kamala Pujari. She will always be remembered for her outstanding contribution in the field of agriculture and social reforms.”
Institutional Recognition
Pujari’s influence extended into the educational and policy-making spheres. In March 2017, a girls’ hostel at the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) in Bhubaneswar was named after Kamala Pujari. This honor reflected her lasting impact on the agricultural community and her role as a role model for future generations.
Policy Contributions
Kamala Pujari was the first tribal woman to be included in the Odisha State Planning Board. She served as a member of a five-member team responsible for developing a five-year plan for the state and providing short and long-term policy guidelines. Her insights and experience were invaluable in shaping agricultural policies that promoted sustainability and indigenous knowledge.
