Violent Backlash Following Sheikh Hasina’s Departure
In the wake of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s departure from Bangladesh, the country has descended into chaos, with 20 leaders from her Awami League party found dead. The unrest, triggered by violent student protests over job quotas for freedom fighters’ children, has led to widespread attacks and significant damage across the nation.
Attacks on Awami League Leaders and Properties
The violence has targeted Awami League leaders and their properties. In Comilla, a city 100 km from Dhaka, a mob set fire to the house of former councillor Md Shah Alam. On Tuesday, a similar mob attacked the residence of MP Shafiqul Islam Shimul, killing four individuals whose bodies were discovered in different parts of the property.
In Dhaka, the Awami League’s main office was set on fire for the second time on Tuesday, following an initial attack on Monday. This repeated destruction underscores the severity of the unrest and its focus on those affiliated with Sheikh Hasina.
Targeting of Minority Communities
The violence has also extended to minority communities, particularly Hindus. Reports indicate that at least 97 properties owned by Hindus—who are perceived by some as supporters of the ousted leader—were attacked, vandalized, and looted over Monday and Tuesday. This includes the desecration of 10 Hindu temples by what the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council describes as “miscreants.”
In a disturbing incident, a Hindu man was beaten to death in Bagerhat district, highlighting the severe impact of the unrest on minority groups.
Hotel Arson Incident
The violence reached a tragic peak with the arson attack on the Zabeer International Hotel in Khulna division. The hotel, owned by Shahin Chakladar, General Secretary of the Jashore district Awami League, was set ablaze, resulting in the death of 24 people. The bodies were found scattered across different floors of the hotel, revealing the extent of the destruction and the disregard for human life.
Political and Administrative Response
In response to the escalating violence and political instability, Bangladesh’s presidency has announced the formation of an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. This decision was made in a meeting with President Mohammed Shahabuddin, top military officials, and student leaders. The interim government aims to address the ongoing crisis and restore order in the country.
As Bangladesh grapples with this unprecedented turmoil, the international community and human rights organizations are closely monitoring the situation, calling for immediate action to protect vulnerable communities and restore peace.
