A Life Dedicated to Trees and Conservation
For over four decades, Gopinath Singh has been on a relentless mission to restore nature, planting trees and creating forests that serve as vital ecosystems. His dedication has not only combated climate change but also preserved biodiversity, providing shelter and sustenance to countless animals and humans.
This year, his unwavering commitment to environmental conservation will receive national recognition. The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change will honour him on January 26, Republic Day, acknowledging his extraordinary contribution to forest conservation.
A Spiritual Calling Turned into a Mission
Born on April 20, 1954, in Itamundia village, Mayurbhanj district, Singh grew up in a humble household. From an early age, he was drawn to spirituality and at just 12 years old, he embraced Sanatan Dharma, which deepened his reverence for nature. By the age of 30, this spiritual connection had transformed into a life mission—planting and protecting trees despite the many hardships he faced, including poverty.
Over the years, his passion only grew stronger. Every morning, he would begin his day with prayers at a local Shiva temple before heading out to plant and nurture trees. Today, his work stands as a testament to his lifelong devotion to the environment.
Creating Forests, Reviving Ecosystems
Singh’s most remarkable achievement is the transformation of barren land into thriving forests. He has personally planted hundreds of thousands of trees, covering over 160 hectares of land. Among his notable contributions is the creation of an Amla (Indian Gooseberry) forest with over 2,000 trees, which has flourished into a self-sustaining green haven.
Initially, he worked alone, investing his own resources to plant and care for trees. His selfless dedication eventually inspired villagers to join his mission. Over time, 110 families became active participants, forming the Bana Suraksha Samiti (Forest Protection Committee) with Singh as their leader.
His efforts did not just stop at planting trees. He also fought against illegal deforestation and land encroachment. “My spiritual journey fostered a deep connection with trees, but witnessing rampant deforestation and illegal encroachments pushed me to take action,” he shared. His determination led to the restoration of lands previously lost to deforestation, welcoming back birds and wildlife that had long abandoned the area.
A Community’s Hero and a Nation’s Pride
Singh’s influence has extended beyond his village. He has travelled extensively across Odisha, planting trees in infertile lands and raising awareness about the importance of forest conservation. His initiative has provided not only environmental benefits but also economic opportunities, as many villagers now rely on these forests for sustainable livelihoods.
Despite facing personal loss—losing his wife a decade ago—Singh never wavered in his mission. Today, his three sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren stand proudly by his side, inspired by his dedication.
“If every village had a person like Gopinath, environmental issues like climate change might not be as pressing today,” a local villager remarked.
His belief in trees as divine entities drives his work. “Trees are like gods. They give us oxygen, food, and shelter. It is our responsibility to protect them and preserve the environment,” he says.
A Legacy That Will Live On
As Gopinath Singh prepares to receive one of the country’s highest environmental honours on Republic Day, his journey serves as an inspiration for all. His story is a reminder that one person’s dedication can make a profound difference in protecting the planet for future generations.
With his tireless work, Singh has not only left behind lush forests but also a legacy of environmental stewardship that will inspire many to follow in his footsteps.
