Born in the slums of Bhubaneswar, Nayak’s childhood was anything but easy. From the tender age of four, he worked as a hotel cleaner, daily laborer, and even a rickshaw puller to support his family. Yet, adversity only fueled his determination to educate himself and serve society. Even while earning a living, he pursued his studies and provided tuition to children in his community, proving that passion and perseverance can defy the toughest of odds.
His journey towards street theatre began when he realized that the best way to educate people was not through books or speeches but through storytelling. He saw how theatre could move people emotionally, instill values, and ignite action. Thus, with no financial backing but an unshakable belief in his cause, he took to the streets to perform plays highlighting critical issues such as road safety, domestic violence, drug abuse, and women’s rights.
Street Plays: A Powerful Weapon for Change
What makes Nayak’s work remarkable is his ability to inspire others. His entire family, including his wife and son, actively participates in his plays, and over time, his cause has attracted a group of 45 dedicated volunteers—doctors, students, and housewives—who now travel across the country performing thought-provoking skits. Together, they have staged over 50,000 plays, making an indelible impact on society.
Nayak’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. His street plays have caught the attention of government agencies, NGOs, and private organizations that now seek his expertise to spread awareness on important initiatives. From promoting government schemes to advocating for social justice, Nayak has become a trusted ally in the mission to drive positive change.
Facing Challenges Head-On
His work, however, has not been without risks. Nayak recalls a chilling experience when he staged a play about the Maoist threat in Odisha. The performance, widely covered by the media, attracted the ire of Maoist sympathizers. While traveling to Rayagada, he was abducted and interrogated. Though his life hung in the balance, he stood firm in his convictions. To his surprise, his captors let him go. Instead of intimidating him, the incident strengthened his resolve to use theatre as a tool for justice and awareness.
Another controversial moment came when he staged a street play outside Rama Devi Women’s University on Valentine’s Day, questioning the adoption of Western traditions over India’s rich cultural heritage. The performance sparked a debate and even led to his brief detention by the police. But for Nayak, these challenges were proof that his plays were making an impact, forcing people to think and question societal norms.
Beyond Theatre: A Life Dedicated to Humanity
Nayak’s contributions extend beyond the stage. He is an ardent blood donor, having donated blood 109 times—an extraordinary act of generosity that has saved countless lives. His efforts have earned him recognition from the highest authorities, including two felicitation ceremonies by the Governor of Odisha. For Nayak, these accolades are secondary to his mission; what drives him is the belief that every small act of kindness contributes to a better world.
Academically, Nayak holds postgraduate degrees in Performing Arts from Utkal University and Hindi from Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Wardha. His educational background, combined with his real-world experience, has enabled him to craft performances that strike the perfect balance between education, entertainment, and social activism.
