NIT Rourkela & IIT Dhanbad Join Forces to Digitally Transform India’s Mining Sector

Two Technical Giants Tackle Mining Modernization

India’s mining sector plays a foundational role in powering the nation’s economy, supporting key industries such as power, manufacturing, and infrastructure. Yet, the sector has long struggled with challenges such as outdated practices, safety risks, and low productivity. Now, a landmark collaboration between two premier institutions—National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NIT-R) and Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad (IIT-ISM)—aims to revolutionize this crucial sector through technological innovation and digital transformation.

A Strategic Alliance to Build a Centre of Excellence

On June 20, NIT Rourkela and IIT Dhanbad jointly launched a Centre of Excellence (CoE) at NIT-R’s Foundation for Technology and Business Incubation (FTBI) campus. This center will focus on developing next-generation technologies in automation, cyber-physical systems (CPS), and digital mining solutions.

The CoE is a collaborative initiative between NIT-R’s FTBI and TEXMiN, a public-sector technology enterprise backed by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), housed at IIT Dhanbad. The inauguration was led by NIT-R Director Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao and IIT-ISM Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra, both of whom underscored the need for disruptive innovation to tackle persistent mining challenges.

Driving Innovation for Safer, Smarter Mining

At the launch, Prof. Rao emphasized how digital technologies can significantly improve safety, operational efficiency, and environmental compliance. Prof. Mishra highlighted the value of applied research in creating scalable solutions that can be easily integrated into mining operations across the country.

The CoE aims to become a national hub for deep-tech mining research, nurturing innovation that directly addresses on-ground issues—such as unstructured workflows, fragmented data, and ecological damage. Real-time data analysis, predictive maintenance systems, automation, and robotics will be central pillars of this initiative.

Multi-Dimensional Impact: Research, Startups, and Policy

Over the next four years, the Centre of Excellence will fund research, offer fellowships to innovators and scholars, and provide access to state-of-the-art labs and expert mentorship. By bridging the gap between academic research and industrial application, the CoE is poised to significantly uplift India’s mining R&D capabilities.

Additionally, the center will support tech-driven startups, encouraging entrepreneurship in the mining and allied sectors. It also aims to play a role in shaping national policy by contributing technical insights to emerging standards on digital mining frameworks.

Solving Long-standing Sectoral Challenges

India’s mining sector has traditionally been hampered by manual, labour-intensive methods, lack of real-time monitoring, frequent accidents, and inefficient resource utilization. Environmental concerns, particularly in coal and mineral mining, have also attracted regulatory scrutiny.

The new CoE directly targets these issues, promising practical solutions rooted in data analytics, sensor technology, automation, and system integration. By embedding CPS into mining operations, companies will be able to make real-time decisions, predict equipment failures, and significantly reduce both downtime and safety incidents.

A Bold Step Towards a Resilient Mining Future

The partnership between NIT Rourkela and IIT Dhanbad marks a turning point in India’s mining modernization journey. By harnessing cutting-edge technology and nurturing talent, the Centre of Excellence is set to drive a new era of smart, safe, and sustainable mining.

This strategic move not only advances India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) vision but also reinforces the role of premier academic institutions in solving real-world challenges. As the mining sector prepares for a tech-driven future, this alliance stands as a model of how innovation and collaboration can reshape traditional industries for long-term national benefit.
