Hospital Horror in Patna: Crime Wave Sparks Political Firestorm in Bihar

Daylight Shooting in Hospital Shocks Bihar

In a chilling display of lawlessness, five armed assailants entered Paras Hospital in Patna in broad daylight on Wednesday and gunned down a notorious gangster, Chandan Mishra, who was undergoing treatment while on parole. The brazen attack was caught on CCTV, showing the men pulling out weapons, storming the room, and firing multiple rounds before fleeing unchallenged.

Mishra, a convicted criminal with dozens of murder cases to his name, was transferred from Buxar to Bhagalpur jail before being granted medical parole. Despite tight police presence typically expected in such cases, the attackers faced no resistance. He later succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

The incident has stunned the city and thrown a harsh spotlight on the deteriorating law-and-order situation in Bihar.

How Did It Happen?

The assailants, believed to be members of a rival gang, walked into the hospital undeterred and executed the attack inside the cabin where Mishra was being treated.

Senior Superintendent of Police Kartikay Sharma confirmed that Mishra was a resident of Buxar and had been targeted by the Chandan Sheru gang, with assistance from local police helping identify the shooters. What has alarmed investigators is the possible involvement of hospital security staff, who are now under investigation for aiding or allowing the attack to occur.

Criminal Past of the Victim

Chandan Mishra was no ordinary patient. He was a seasoned gangster with an extensive rap sheet, including multiple charges of murder and extortion. While his death may mark the end of one chapter of gang violence in Bihar, it also reflects the audacity with which criminals operate, often more feared than the police.

That he was attacked inside a hospital — under police knowledge — speaks volumes about the breakdown in basic law enforcement protocols, and has intensified scrutiny of Bihar’s security apparatus.

Rising Crime: A State on Edge

This shocking hospital murder comes amid a spike in violent crimes across Bihar, particularly in Patna. In recent weeks, high-profile murders have rattled public confidence, including:

·       Businessman Gopal Khemka, gunned down near his office

·       BJP leader Surendra Kewat, shot dead while campaigning

·       Lawyer Jitendra Mahato, killed in broad daylight in front of his home

According to police records, over 50 murders have taken place in the first 14 days of this month alone, painting a grim picture of Bihar’s law-and-order situation. Violent crimes — ranging from robberies and gang shootouts to political killings — are being reported almost daily.

Despite repeated government assurances of crackdown and justice, public faith in law enforcement is eroding. “Criminals no longer fear the law,” said a retired IPS officer. “This pattern of impunity is dangerous.”

Political Fallout: Opposition Smells Opportunity

The hospital shooting has triggered a political storm, with opposition parties — especially the RJD and Congress — seizing on the incident to hammer the Nitish Kumar-led JDU-BJP government.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav lashed out:

“Government-backed criminals stormed into an ICU and shot a patient. Is anyone safe in Bihar anymore? Was this even imaginable before 2005?”

Purnea MP Pappu Yadav went further, calling for President’s Rule in the state.

“This government shelters criminals. Nurses, doctors — no one is safe. The state is lawless. I will write to the Governor demanding President’s Rule,” he declared.

RJD spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari echoed the sentiment: “Bihar has descended into Gunda Raj. Crime is out of control, and the government is sleeping.”

The ruling camp, however, is on the defensive. Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sinha assured a full investigation:

“Such an incident is unfortunate and unacceptable. The criminals will be caught and punished. No one will be spared.”

But the damage may already be done — with elections months away, the opposition is using the deteriorating law-and-order situation as a central talking point.

Governance at a Crossroads

The brazen daylight murder of a gangster inside a hospital — under police watch — is not just a symbol of criminal audacity, but a damning indictment of governance in Bihar. That five men could walk into a top hospital, carry out a cold-blooded killing, and leave without resistance has eroded public trust and sent shockwaves across the state.

With over 50 murders in just two weeks, Bihar appears caught in a rising tide of violence, one that even the ruling government struggles to contain. While political blame games intensify, what the public truly seeks is accountability, safety, and decisive action — not more statements.

The coming weeks will test not just the capacity of Bihar’s police, but also the political will of its leaders. If the current trend of unchecked violence continues, it may not just threaten lives, but reshape the political landscape of the state.
