Tata Steel Foundation Opens Tribal Arts Centre in Odisha’s Gobarghati

Preserving Heritage Through Community Empowerment

The Tata Steel Foundation (TSF), the corporate social responsibility arm of Tata Steel, has reinforced its long-standing commitment to cultural preservation and community development by inaugurating a Tribal Dance and Music Centre at Gobarghati Phase 2, Bamiaghata Community Hall in Odisha’s Jajpur district.

The initiative aligns with TSF’s broader mission of sustainable and inclusive growth, with a strong emphasis on nurturing indigenous heritage and empowering displaced communities around its operational areas, particularly near Tata Steel Kalinganagar (TSK).

A Platform for Cultural Revival

The new centre, jointly inaugurated by Suvransu Sekhar Rout, Chief of Logistics Operations at TSK, and Rabindra Kumar Jamuda, President of the Tata Steel Kalinganagar Workers’ Union, is envisioned as a dynamic space for cultural learning, performance, and intergenerational knowledge sharing.

By promoting tribal dance and music, the centre aims to become a focal point for youth, women, and elders from the region — especially from the rehabilitated families of Chadia, Gobarghati, and New Champakoila — to reconnect with and carry forward their cultural roots.

Building Momentum Through Community Engagement

Ahead of the inauguration, TSF conducted a four-day workshop from July 7 to 10, in collaboration with Jharkhand-based cultural group Adivasi Ramoj Akhra. The workshop drew over 60 participants and created an atmosphere of celebration and cultural pride.

Through this hands-on engagement, local youth and community leaders explored traditional music and dance forms, fostering both skill development and cultural identity. The program not only energized the participants but also laid the groundwork for the centre’s ongoing activities.

A Broader Vision for CSR in Odisha

This project is part of a wider array of CSR initiatives by Tata Steel Foundation in Odisha, which span education, healthcare, livelihoods, and environment sustainability. The foundation has consistently invested in socially impactful programs that cater to both immediate welfare and long-term empowerment of communities in the vicinity of Tata Steel’s operations.

Culture as a Catalyst for Inclusion

The Tribal Dance and Music Centre in Gobarghati is more than a cultural institution — it is a symbol of TSF’s inclusive development model. By valuing and uplifting indigenous traditions, the initiative builds not only cultural continuity but also social cohesion, dignity, and community pride for generations to come.
