East Coast Railway Breaks National Record in Freight Loading

Odisha’s March Towards All-Round Growth

Odisha has consistently strived to set benchmarks in infrastructure, industry, and governance, with a steady focus on inclusive development. A key contributor to this progress has been its robust railway network, which not only fuels regional growth but also plays a pivotal role in strengthening India’s logistics backbone. The latest achievement of the East Coast Railway (ECoR) stands as a striking testimony to this momentum. By becoming the first railway zone in the country to load 100 million tonnes of freight in just 134 days, ECoR has once again underscored its operational excellence and national significance.

A Record-Breaking Feat

On 12 August 2025, ECoR crossed the 100 MT milestone—achieving the landmark 14 days earlier than in the previous financial year. This rapid progress also represents a 10.7% increase over last year’s performance for the same period, improving on the earlier record of 148 days. Officials described it as a clear reflection of the zone’s commitment to efficiency, reliability, and timely service in meeting rising freight demands.

Key Commodities Powering Growth

The surge in freight has been driven primarily by critical commodities vital to the nation’s energy and manufacturing sectors.

·       Coal: 57.734 MT loaded this year, up from 55.17 MT in 2024–25, marking a 4.6% rise.

·       Iron Ore: 25.984 MT achieved, compared to 21.758 MT last year, a strong 19.4% growth.

·       Cement: 0.409 MT transported, showing a 32.8% increase over 0.308 MT previously.

Other categories also demonstrated strong upward movement. Food grain loading rose by 18.3% to 1.171 MT, while fertilizer transport witnessed an impressive 39.2% jump, reaching 2.858 MT from 2.053 MT the year before. Collectively, these gains highlight both the demand for essential commodities and ECoR’s agility in meeting them.

Strategy and Operational Excellence

Behind the figures lies meticulous planning and disciplined execution. Railway authorities credited the success to strategic infrastructure use, seamless coordination with industries, and streamlined freight-handling mechanisms. By prioritising high-demand sectors like coal, iron ore, cement, and fertilizers, ECoR has reinforced its role as a backbone for industrial supply chains. This approach has not only served businesses but has also strengthened India’s broader goal of ensuring energy security and manufacturing growth.

A National Leader in Freight Movement

Among the 17 zones of Indian Railways, ECoR’s leadership is now firmly established. Its record-setting pace makes it a model for other zones, encouraging replication of best practices across the national freight network. Observers point out that achievements of this scale will inspire greater competitiveness, thereby improving logistics efficiency at the national level.

Aligning with India’s Green Logistics Vision

The accomplishment also carries environmental and economic significance. By enabling more goods to move via rail rather than road, ECoR contributes directly to lowering logistics costs and reducing carbon emissions. This aligns with India’s long-term strategy of expanding freight capacity while transitioning towards greener transport solutions.

Setting New Benchmarks for India

The East Coast Railway’s achievement is more than a statistical milestone—it is a symbol of Odisha’s larger development journey and India’s push towards smarter logistics. By crossing the 100 MT mark in record time, ECoR has showcased how vision, planning, and execution can combine to transform performance. As the zone continues to innovate and deliver, it strengthens not just Odisha’s economy but also India’s march toward sustainable growth and global competitiveness.
