Google Picks Andhra Pradesh for Its Largest AI Hub Outside the US

Andhra Pradesh’s Global Tech Vision

Andhra Pradesh has once again found itself at the forefront of India’s technology revolution. Known for his pro-investment policies and futuristic development plans, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has long envisioned transforming the state into a global innovation hub. His administration’s open-door approach to foreign partnerships and cutting-edge industries has already attracted major corporations in the past — from Kia Motors in Anantapur to Amazon’s large fulfilment centres. Now, a new feather is being added to the state’s cap as global tech titan Google announces its largest artificial intelligence (AI) and data centre investment outside the United States, right here in Andhra Pradesh.

Google’s Landmark Commitment

In a move that underscores India’s growing significance in the global digital economy, Alphabet Inc.’s Google has unveiled plans to invest $10 billion in a state-of-the-art AI and data centre complex in the port city of Visakhapatnam. The announcement marks Google’s biggest single infrastructure investment in India to date.

The project, part of a broader $15 billion investment plan over the next five years, will include a 1-gigawatt data centre campus integrating high-performance AI systems, renewable energy solutions, and an extensive fibre-optic network. Officials from the Andhra Pradesh government confirmed that a formal agreement was signed at a high-profile event in New Delhi attended by Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with Chief Minister Naidu and IT Minister Nara Lokesh.

Strategic Significance for India and the State

The Visakhapatnam campus will serve as Google’s largest AI hub outside the US, a testament to India’s strategic importance in the global technology landscape. Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, described the project as a “transformational step” that would position Andhra Pradesh as a global nerve centre for AI research, data processing, and cloud infrastructure.

The investment comes at a time when tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon are racing to expand their data infrastructure to meet the explosive demand for AI-driven services. By anchoring its operations in Andhra Pradesh, Google is not only signaling confidence in India’s potential but also reinforcing the state’s position as a preferred destination for high-value technology investment.

Local Vision, Global Impact

Speaking at the event, IT Minister Nara Lokesh emphasized the importance of data as the new driver of economic power. “In an era where data is the new oil, such initiatives will give India a strategic advantage,” he said.

The upcoming AI and data campus will likely generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, boost local infrastructure, and encourage ancillary industries such as logistics, clean energy, and cybersecurity. The project is expected to catalyze technological education and skill development in the region, aligning with the Naidu government’s vision of digital empowerment and innovation-led growth.

Building on a Proven Track Record

This is not the first time Andhra Pradesh has attracted global attention for forward-looking investments. During Naidu’s previous tenure, the state became home to Amaravati’s smart city projects and IT hubs in Tirupati and Visakhapatnam, drawing investments from IBM, Infosys, and Tech Mahindra. The new Google investment continues this legacy, placing Andhra Pradesh firmly on the global technology map.

A Blueprint for India’s Digital Ascent

Google’s monumental investment in Andhra Pradesh is more than just a business move — it’s a strategic partnership between global innovation and local vision. As artificial intelligence reshapes economies, this collaboration signals India’s readiness to lead the next phase of the digital revolution.

For Chandrababu Naidu and his team, the Visakhapatnam project stands as validation of their long-term development philosophy: that vision, infrastructure, and global collaboration can turn states into engines of national progress. For India, it represents yet another stride toward becoming the AI capital of the Global South, powered by a confluence of technology, talent, and trust.
